LMDF visits coffee farmer in Peru – Climate Change impact

LMDF’s CEO, Kaspar Wansleben visited the partner microfinancing institution CrediFlorida in the Selva Central of the lower Andes. Crediflorida is specialized in financing smallholder coffee, cacao, citrus and pineapple farmers in this remote region of Peru. LMDF has been financing the cooperative since 2012.

The visit was to better understand the challenges smallholders face in global value chains such as coffee and which financing instruments may help. The visit also illustrated the impact climate change has on smallholder. A warmer and wetter climate has forced many coffee farmers to either move uphill to cooler regions or abandon coffee for other crops. This is a complex adaptation process which will risks leaving many of the smallest farmers behind.
